Celebrating the history of American Indian Cultures
Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park honors more than 17,000 years of human history. As a National Historical Park, the 2,000 acres are home to one of the National Park Service’s largest archeological collections, with the earliest finds being traced back to the Ice Age. Now, visitors can appreciate this local history and learn more about the people who once inhabited this gorgeous landmark. Visit the breathtaking Earth Lodge, dating back to the year 1015, and the Visitor Center for a fully immersive and astounding collection of artifacts. The Ocmulgee Heritage Trail stretches more than thirteen miles, where you can walk, bike, hike, and explore wetlands and wildlife areas while embracing preserved natural history. While the park is already recognized as a national historical park, its cultural and historical significance will soon earn it the title of Georgia’s first National Park, with Congress expected to bestow this accreditation as soon as 2022.
