Finding Home in Macon: Lydia’s Story

Background & Journey

For Lydia, Macon was not love at first sight. It was something that grew over time into a deep connection rooted in community, career, and everyday life.

Originally from Benton, Arkansas, Lydia’s journey to Macon began with a commitment to service. After graduating high school, she attended Marion Military Institute before commissioning into the Georgia Army National Guard. She later chose Mercer University to complete her undergraduate degree, drawn in part by the opportunity to train with the Georgia Officer Training Site.

When she first arrived, Macon felt familiar, but not quite like home.

“It was like home, but bigger, and better food. It honestly took me about a year to really start loving it.”

That changed as she spent more time downtown, getting to know the restaurants, the people, and the personality of the city.

“Once I got downtown and started going to restaurants, it just felt like home.”

Putting Down Roots

What started as a short-term plan quickly turned into something more permanent.

Lydia began coaching swimming at Fusion Swim Team, and not long after, she met her husband, Madison. The two planned to stay in Macon for just a few years, but that timeline didn’t last long.

“We lived downtown on Spring Street and just fell in love with the city and decided to stay.”

Today, Lydia serves as an officer in the Georgia Army National Guard, focusing on special projects and operations. Her work has not only connected her with people across the state but has also deepened her involvement locally. Through her career and personal life, she has built relationships with organizations like Historic Macon Foundation, downtown business owners, and community leaders along with her husband, Madison, who is the Regional Manager at Stretch Zone Macon.

Life in Macon

For Lydia and her family, life in Macon is a balance of routine and connection.

During the week, their days are centered around work, family time, and the gym (OneLife Fitness). But they make it a priority to enjoy the city, whether that means dinner with friends or a quick dessert stop.

“We try to throw in dinner with friends once or twice a month downtown or at one of our favorites, Jim Shaw’s Seafood Grill, and of course LAYERS for dessert.”

Weekends are spent at church, walking downtown, and exploring local events. Throughout the year, they look forward to traditions like the Cherry Blossom Festival, Mercer football games, the Macon Christmas Light Extravaganza, and local markets.

They also enjoy spending time at places like Barks & Brews and exploring Macon’s food scene.

Some of Lydia’s favorite local spots include Piedmont Brewery, Fall Line Brewing Co., Fountain of Juice, and Sweet Eleanor’s.

Community & Connection

What stands out most to Lydia is the people.

She describes Macon as “tight knit and supportive,” a place where connections grow naturally when you make the effort to get involved. For her, monthly gathering grew into lasting friendships within her group of friends creating a Silent Book Club for the ladies and Men & Meat night for the men.

“You just have to get out there.”

That sense of connection is what ultimately made Macon feel like home. It is a place where you can know the owners of local businesses, run into familiar faces at the grocery store, and build relationships that last.

Why Macon

Over time, what once felt new became something deeply familiar.

“Macon is small enough where you can see people you know in Kroger. Everyone seems to know everyone.”

That closeness, paired with the city’s history and hospitality, has shaped both her personal and professional life in meaningful ways.

For those considering a move, Lydia offers simple advice.

“It doesn’t grow on you fast, but the longer you’re here, the deeper your love for it grows.”

In her words, “Macon is a historic city for people who find charm in old Southern places.”

For Lydia and her family, it is more than that. It is home, and a place where their story continues to grow with every new connection, experience, and season.
